Questions

How do I find the tax on a receipt that only shows the total?

Use the "includes tax" mode. Divide the total by one plus the combined rate to get the price before tax; the difference is the tax. For a $113 Ontario receipt that is $100 before tax and $13 of HST.

Which tax do I charge a client in another province?

For most services and goods, the tax of the province where the client is (the place of supply), not where you are. An Ontario freelancer billing a Calgary client charges 5% GST, not 13% HST.

Do I charge GST/HST at all?

Only once you are registered. Registration is mandatory when your worldwide taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive quarters; below that you are a small supplier and may register voluntarily to recover the tax you pay.
